Launch a web based news service that gives an alternative view of major news stories but with a positive and more realistic spin. For example, in the event of an air crash the site would give statistics on how many airplanes had taken off and landed safely that day. This would help mitigate the sensationalism that dominates today's news by reminding us all that the world is generally a pretty great place.

I think youve missed the point of 'news'

Planes not crashing is not news, planes crashing is.

He han't missed the point, when newsworthy storys happen, it puts an optimistic view on it, putting things into perspective and not just trying to sensationalise stories to grab the biggest headlines.

How's this for example:

"Only two hundred people died in a crash today, while another 2 million airline passangers arrived safely at their location.  The unfortunates joined another 150 poor souls that were killed in car accidents throughout the day. It is, however, consoling to know that over one hundred million others got home in time for supper this evening."

Great Idea. There is far too much 'bad' news on TV and in the newspapers. More balanced reporting is certainly needed.

I think it was Maeterlink who said, "Happiness writes white. It doesn't show up on the page".

i *need* this kind of news service.

i hope they show it on t.v., too.

i know i always get more paranoid/fearful each day when all i see on tv is how bad things happen to ordinary people, and i get the subliminal message that "one of these days, you're next!"

One news reporter who comes close to using this approach would be Paul Harvey!!!
